Student Organization Development workshops

The Student Organization Development Menu covers a wide range of topics to help your organization identify areas of learning and growth, support the development of your membership, and engage in consistent reflection and innovation in line with your group’s goals. Sessions on this menu can be individually requested for presentation as an organization session, and these sessions and more are offered through scheduled workshops throughout the year.

Event Planning 101
Gain a comprehensive overview of the event planning process, from initial concept to implementation to post-event evaluation. Learn about UNCG Event Policies and processes, organizing program budgets and logistics, and marketing and promotion tools to help your program meet your organization’s goals. 

Membership Recruitment and Retention
Equip your group with the strategies to effectively grow and sustain your organizations. Learn about recruitment strategies, building a welcoming environment, member engagement, community building, and developing your membership to build and sustain a strong organization foundation. 

Fundraising and Financial Management
An overview of the financial policies, procedures, and best practices essential for managing your organization’s funds effectively and ethically, and fundraising strategies to move towards your group’s goals! Delegation and Establishing Clear Roles
This session focuses on the critical leadership skills needed to build a more efficient, productive, and less stressed team. By learning how to delegate effectively, you can maximize your organization’s potential and prevent member burnout.  

Organizational Visioning and Goal Setting
Designed to help student leaders at UNCG create a clear direction for their organizations, this session is all about moving your group from simply existing to actively working towards a meaningful, long-term vision. By learning to set effective goals, you can provide a strong sense of purpose for your members and drive tangible progress throughout the academic year. 

Anti-Hazing Training
Designed to ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all students, this training provides a critical overview of UNCG’s anti-hazing policies, the legal implications of hazing, and the importance of fostering positive team-building activities. We will focus on how to recognize hazing behaviors and how to build community and program within student groups in a safe and healthy way.

Covers how to build and format resumes for different opportunities, with tips on making transferable student organization leadership content impactful and relevant. 

Networking and LinkedIn
Learn how to create and enhance your profile, build your network, and navigate professional conversations. 

Interview Strategies
Prepare for interviews, conferences and professional conversations by covering common formats, behavioral questions, and how to communicate confidently. 

Technology Demo
A walkthrough of our career platforms, including Handshake (job and internship search, appointments), Big Interview (interview practice and tutorials), and VMock (AI-powered resume feedback). Learn how to access and effectively use each tool to support your career development. 

Team Development Programs at Piney Lake
UNCG Outdoor Adventures is excited to offer Team Development Programs for UNCG groups looking to take their team to the next level. These shared experiences can foster camaraderie and mutual respect, and help groups to be more cohesive as they navigate progressively more challenging tasks within the program and apply the insights gained beyond the program. Team Climbing Wall Experience at the Kaplan Center
UNCG’s own artificial rock climbing wall, reaches up to 54 feet in height and has many features that replicate real rock, such as cracks, chimneys, arêtes, and more. Routes are set for all skill levels that offer a variety of challenging and fun climbing options. Burgundy Zone Training
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted in 1990 to protect individuals with disabilities. It is a Civil Rights Law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Erase Hate: Hosted by the UNCG Dean of Students office, this session will educate attendees on the University’s bias reporting process and provide tools to foster a more inclusive campus environment by promoting student belonging and proactively addressing and preventing bias-related incidents. Clifton Strengths: Identifying and Utilizing your Strengths in your Organization
Designed to help UNCG student leaders harness the power of their individual talents using the CliftonStrengths assessment, this session will help you understand your unique strengths, become a more effective leader, delegate more effectively, and contribute more meaningfully to your student organization. This session is an opportunity to discover your natural talents and learn how to apply them to build a stronger, more successful team. 

Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) Workshop
Providing a detailed framework for understanding and improving your leadership skills by exploring The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, you will gain insight into your own leadership style and learn how to inspire others to achieve extraordinary things. 

Values Identification Workshop
This session is designed to help UNCG student leaders uncover and articulate their core personal values. Understanding your values is the foundation of authentic and effective leadership. This session will guide you through an introspective process to define what truly matters to you, enabling you to make more intentional decisions, lead with integrity, and build a purpose-driven organization. 

Living Our Values: How Personal and Organizational Values Shape Organization Success
This workshop is a practical session designed for UNCG student leaders who have already identified their personal values and are ready to apply them. “Living Our Values” bridges the gap between what your organization says it stands for and what it actually does. By aligning your personal values with your organization’s mission, you can build a more purpose-driven, authentic, and successful group. This is about making your values a living part of your organization’s culture. 

Community Leadership: Leading our Peers Together
Let’s move beyond traditional top-down management to focus on collaborative, servant leadership, where you lead alongside your peers, not above them. This workshop provides practical strategies for building consensus, fostering shared responsibility, and empowering every member to be a leader in their own right. 

Active Listening: Seeking Understanding within your Group
In a fast-paced environment, it’s easy to get caught up in planning what you’ll say next, but true leadership begins with seeking to understand. This session will provide you with the tools to listen more effectively, leading to better communication, stronger relationships, and a more cohesive and collaborative organization. 

Beyond Buzzwords: Preparing Changemakers for Impact
This session moves past popular, but often vague, terms used to describe leadership and civic engagement. Instead, it provides a practical framework for identifying a problem, designing a meaningful solution, and measuring your organization’s true impact on the community. This workshop will equip you with the tools to be an effective, ethical, and thoughtful changemaker. 

Voter 101 Workshop
Trained student voter engagement fellows along with OLCE staff will cover the importance of voting, UNCG voting rates, current voter registration requirements, and how and where voting takes place. Participants will have the opportunity to register to vote during this workshop. All content is non-partisan and friendly to all political ideologies.   

Spartan Leadership Challenge
The Spartan Leadership Challenge is OLCE’s signature leadership development journey—designed to empower you with the skills, experiences, and confidence to lead with purpose. Rooted in the social change model of leadership development, this university-wide program connects classroom learning with real-world leadership through interactive workshops, service projects, and reflection. Bronze, Silver, and Gold Experiences prepare you to graduate career-ready, community-minded, and fully prepared to be a changemaker in any field!   

Stress Management
Stress affects our mind, body, emotions, and behavior. It shows up differently for everyone. While some stress is a good thing as it aids in performance enhancement, other forms of stress can be very debilitating. When considering health, we often think only in terms of physical; however true wellness is much broader. A holistic approach to wellness supports the whole person and encompasses eight dimensions. Safe Social Practice Training
This comprehensive training is designed to empower you with the knowledge and skills to create a responsible, safe, and healthy social environment for your organization’s members. UNCG’s one-word motto, “service” began with its first graduating class in 1893. The calling to give back to the community surrounding our campus defines us as Spartans. Student Organizations can serve alongside one another by signing up for a service opportunity together or creating your own.  

Spartan Experience Certification for Student Organizations

Want to become a Spartan Experience Certified Student Organization (SECSO)? Spartan Experience Certified Student Organizations demonstrate their commitment to the development of their organization, their peers, and the UNCG community. SECSO groups receive special recognition status for the next academic year, and a number of benefits only certified groups are eligible to receive. All sessions on the menu can be requested/attended by student organizations, and can earn your group credit towards SECSO status. At least two student group members need to attend each workshop to earn credit towards the SECSO designation.

To become a Spartan Experience Certified Student Organization, student groups must complete all of the below items within one academic year. The deadline for the 2025-2026 academic year is Friday, April 3, 2026. At least two student group members need to attend each workshop to earn credit towards the SECSO designation.

  2. Complete a service project with your student organization and track the service in GivePulse.

  2. Reception with University leaders to honor awarded groups
  3. Free registration (table and chairs) for Fall Kickoff
  4. Guaranteed early registration for Winter Involvement Fair
  5. Receive $100 in student organization funds
  6. Custom badge on Spartan Connect page, social media accounts, emails, etc.
  7. Spartan Experience Certified wall plaque in the Elliott University Center

How does my organization receive credit for the sessions we attend?
When you check in to a workshop or session with your Spartan Card, the CAP office will receive the data and confirm your attendance.

Can I earn credit for multiple organizations I am a member of?
Yes.

How does my organization know how close I am to achieving the requirements to earn SECSO status?
